The Taifa of Zaragoza was an independent Muslim kingdom. It was located in the eastern part of Al-Andalus, which is modern-day Spain. This kingdom was formed in 1018. Its capital city was Saraqusta, known today as Zaragoza.
The Taifa of Zaragoza appeared in the 11th century. This happened after the powerful Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart. The Caliphate had controlled much of the Iberian Peninsula. When it fell, many smaller independent kingdoms, called taifas, were formed.
For the first 20 years, from 1018 to 1038, the Arab Banu Tujib tribe ruled Zaragoza. Later, the Arab Banu Hud family took control. They faced many challenges. They even had to make a difficult alliance with El Cid, a famous warrior from Valencia. El Cid and his Castilian allies fought against the Almoravids. The Almoravids were a powerful group who wanted to control all the taifa kingdoms.
After El Cid died, the Almoravids conquered his kingdom. By 1100, they had moved into the Ebro region. This led to direct conflicts with the Christian Kingdom of Aragon.
The Banu Hud rulers bravely resisted the Almoravid dynasty. But in May 1110, the Almoravids finally defeated them. The last Banu Hud ruler, Abd-al-Malik, had to leave Zaragoza. He then teamed up with the Christian Aragonese king, Alfonso I of Aragon. From that point on, Muslim soldiers from Zaragoza fought alongside the Aragonese. Soon after, in 1118, the Christian Kingdom of Aragon conquered much of the old taifa, including Zaragoza city. It remained under Christian rule from then on.
Between about 1040 and 1105, the Taifa of Lérida was a separate kingdom. It was not part of Zaragoza during that time.
