Abd-al-Aziz al-Mansur was an important ruler, known as an emir, of the Taifa of Valencia from 1021 to 1061. A taifa was a small, independent Muslim kingdom in what is now Spain. He was the son of Abd al-Rahman Sanchuelo.
Abd-al-Aziz was very young, only two years old, when his father died. To keep him safe, he was taken to the city of Zaragoza, where he spent his childhood. When he turned fifteen, with help from Zaragoza, he became the new ruler of Valencia. This happened through a change in power, making him the king.
Building the City's Defenses
Abd-al-Aziz al-Mansur is remembered for building a strong wall around the city of Valencia. This was an important project to protect the city. Some parts of this ancient Arab wall can still be seen today.
Features of the Wall
A geographer named al-Urdi described the wall built by Abd-al-Aziz. He said it had seven gates, which were like entrances to the city. These gates were protected by semi-circular towers, making the wall even stronger.
