Abd al-Malik's Rule in Valencia
Abd al-Malik became the leader of the Taifa of Valencia in 1061. A "Taifa" was a small, independent Muslim kingdom in medieval Spain. These kingdoms formed after the larger Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart.
Challenges to His Power
In the spring of 1065, Valencia faced a big challenge. Fernando I of Leon, a Christian king, attacked the city. His army surrounded Valencia, trying to take control. This kind of attack is called a siege.
The Battle of Paterna
Abd al-Malik got help from his father-in-law, Emir al-Mamun of Toledo. Al-Mamun was the ruler of the nearby Taifa of Toledo. Together, they managed to break the siege and push back Fernando I's forces.
However, during a battle known as the Battle of Paterna, Abd al-Malik's army suffered a major defeat. This loss weakened his position greatly.
End of His Reign
After the defeat, Abd al-Malik's father-in-law, al-Mamun, made a plan. He convinced Ibn Rawbax, Valencia's prime minister, to remove Abd al-Malik from power.
Valencia was then joined with the Taifa of Toledo. Ibn Rawbax became the new governor of Valencia under Toledo's rule. This marked the end of Abd al-Malik's time as emir.
