Yahya ibn Ismail al-Mamun (Arabic: المأمون بن ذي النون) was an important ruler in medieval Spain. He was the second leader of the Dhulnunid dynasty, a family of Berber origin. From 1043 to 1075, he ruled the Taifa of Toledo, which was a small Muslim kingdom.

Who Was Yahya al-Mamun?

Yahya ibn Ismail al-Mamun was a powerful leader during a time when Spain was divided into many small kingdoms. These kingdoms were called "taifas." He was known as an "emir," which means a ruler or prince in the Islamic world.

His Family and Rise to Power

Yahya al-Mamun became the ruler of the Taifa of Toledo in 1043. He took over after his father, Ismail al-Zahir, passed away. His family, the Dhulnunids, were an important dynasty in the region. A dynasty is a series of rulers from the same family.

Ruling the Taifa of Toledo

The Taifa of Toledo was one of the most important taifas in Al-Andalus. Al-Andalus was the name for the parts of Spain ruled by Muslims in the Middle Ages. As emir, Yahya al-Mamun was in charge of governing the people and protecting his kingdom. He ruled for over 30 years, from 1043 until his death in 1075.

His Death

Yahya al-Mamun died in 1075 in the city of Córdoba. After his death, his grandson, Yahya al-Qadir, became the next ruler of the Taifa of Toledo.
