Ismail b. Abd al-Rahman b. Di-l-Nun (died 1043 in Toledo), also known as Ismaíl al-Zafir, was the first ruler of the Taifa of Toledo. A "taifa" was a small independent Muslim kingdom in what is now Spain. He belonged to the Dhulnunid dynasty.

Ismail al-Zafir ruled from 1032 until his death in 1043. After him, his son Al-Mamun became the next ruler.

About Ismail al-Zafir

Ismail al-Zafir was the son of Abd al-Rahman ibn Di-l-Nun. His father was a governor in several important areas like Santaver and Cuenca.

Early Life and Rise to Power

In 1018, when Ismail was old enough, his father gave him control of Uclés. Later, the people of Toledo asked him to come and rule them. They were not happy with their current leaders.

Ismail al-Zafir went to Toledo and successfully created a new independent kingdom there in 1032. This became known as the Taifa of Toledo.

Family Connections

Ismail al-Zafir had a sister who married Yahya al-Muzáffar. Yahya was the ruler of another kingdom, the Taifa of Zaragoza. Ismail's sister and Yahya had a son named Mundir II.

Interests and Legacy

Ismail al-Zafir enjoyed poetry and wrote several poems himself. He was also a big supporter of science and art, especially literature. These interests were later continued by his son, Al-Mamún.

Ismail al-Zafir passed away in 1043.
