Yahya al-Qadir facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Yahya ibn Ismail ibn Yahya, also known by his special title al-Qadir bi-llah, was an important ruler in Spain a long time ago. He led the Dhulnunid kingdom of Toledo from 1075 until 1085. After Toledo fell, he became the ruler of the Valencia from 1086 until he died in 1092.

Becoming a Ruler

Al-Qadir became the ruler of Toledo in 1075. He took over after his grandfather, al-Mamun, died.

In 1079, the people of Toledo rebelled against him. The ruler of another kingdom, the Taifa of Badajoz, named al-Mutawakkil ibn al-Aftas [es], took control of Toledo. Al-Qadir had to escape.

Getting Help from Alfonso VI

Al-Qadir asked for help from King Alfonso VI of León and Castile. King Alfonso VI came to his aid. With Alfonso's help, Al-Qadir was able to get Toledo back on May 25, 1085. From then on, he ruled Toledo as a "vassal" of King Alfonso. This meant he was still the ruler, but he had to obey King Alfonso.

Ruling Valencia

Al-Qadir also wanted to rule the kingdom of Valencia. However, another ruler, Yusuf al-Mu'taman ibn Hud from the Taifa of Zaragoza, also wanted Valencia.

Once again, King Alfonso VI sent his soldiers to help Al-Qadir. These soldiers were led by a commander named Álvar Fáñez.

In return for this help, King Alfonso VI asked Al-Qadir to fight against a group called the Almoravids in 1086. This happened at a battle called the battle of Sagrajas.

The End of His Rule

In 1092, there was another uprising in Valencia. A religious leader named Ibn Yahhaf led this rebellion. He had support from people who wanted the Almoravids to rule.

This uprising removed Al-Qadir from power. He was executed on October 28, 1092.
