Abd al-Haqq II (Arabic: عبد الحق الثاني) was a ruler of Morocco from 1420 to 1465. He belonged to the Marinid dynasty. He became sultan when he was just a baby. For most of his rule, other powerful people controlled the country.
Becoming Sultan
Abd al-Haqq II was born in 1419. His father was Sultan Abu Said Uthman III. In 1419, his father tried to take back the city of Ceuta from the Portuguese, but he failed. This made the country unstable.
In 1420, there was a sudden change of power in Fez. Sultan Abu Said Uthman III was killed. At this time, Abd al-Haqq was only one year old. Many people wanted to become the new sultan, causing a struggle for power.
Abu Zakariya Yahya al-Wattasi was a governor. When he heard about the sultan's death, he quickly took control of the royal palace in Fez. He announced that the young Abd al-Haqq would be the new Marinid sultan. Abu Zakariya also made himself the vizier, which means he was the chief minister and would rule for the child sultan. This period was called a "regency." Morocco then faced a lot of disorder. By 1423, Abu Zakariya al-Wattasi was the real ruler of the country.
A Ruler Under Control
When Abd al-Haqq grew up in 1437, he was old enough to rule on his own. However, Abu Zakariya refused to give up his power as regent.
In 1437, the Portuguese tried to attack Tangier. They wanted to take advantage of the problems in Morocco. But the Moroccans successfully defended the city. This victory made the people feel proud and strong. Abu Zakariya used this success to make his own power even greater. He had no plans to let Abd al-Haqq rule.
In 1438, something important happened under Abu Zakariya's rule. The tomb of Idris II was found again. Idris II was a very important person who founded the city of Fez. His tomb became a special place for people to visit.
Abu Zakariya died in 1448. His nephew, Ali ibn Yusuf, became the new vizier. Then, in 1458, Abu Zakariya's son, Yahya ibn Abi Zakariya, took over. Even though Abd al-Haqq was still called the sultan, he had no real power. He was killed in 1465 during a revolt in Morocco.
