Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki (born August 26, 1995) was a 16-year-old American teenager. He was killed in Yemen on October 14, 2011, by a U.S. drone strike. A drone strike is when an unmanned aircraft fires missiles. Abdulrahman was the son of Anwar al-Awlaki.

His Death and What Happened Next

Abdulrahman al-Awlaki's father, Anwar al-Awlaki, was said by the United States government to be a leader of a group called al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. This group is known for its terrorist activities. Anwar al-Awlaki was also killed by a U.S. drone strike a few days before his son died.

The U.S. drone strike that killed Abdulrahman was part of a plan approved by the U.S. government. Officials later said that the main target of the strike was another person, not Abdulrahman. They stated that Abdulrahman was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time." They also said the U.S. government did not know he was there before the strike happened.

Some groups that work for human rights questioned why Abdulrahman, an American citizen, was killed in Yemen. At the time, the United States was not officially at war with Yemen. These groups believed that the public should know more about why such actions are taken.
