Abeer Alwan is an American electrical engineer and a researcher who studies how we make and understand speech. She is a professor at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. There, she teaches electrical and computer engineering. She also helps lead the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
Learning and Career
Abeer Alwan finished her studies at Northeastern University in 1983. Later, in 1992, she earned her advanced degree (a doctorate) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her special research project was about how we hear speech, especially in noisy places.
She started teaching at UCLA in 1992. By 2000, she became a full professor. In 2015, she took on a leadership role as vice chair. From 2000 to 2003, she was also the main editor for a science magazine called Speech Communication. One of her well-known students at UCLA is Shrikanth Narayanan.
Special Honors
Abeer Alwan has received many special honors for her work. In 2003, she was named a 'Fellow' of the Acoustical Society of America. This is a high honor given to experts in sound and acoustics.
In 2008, she became a 'Fellow' of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). This was for her important work on how people understand and make speech. In 2011, she also became a 'Fellow' of the International Speech Communication Association. This was for her work on making computers understand and create speech.
She has also been a Radcliffe Fellow. She has given important talks as a 'distinguished lecturer' for different science groups. These include the International Speech Communication Association and the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association.
