Abel Pacheco de la Espriella (born on December 22, 1933) is a Costa Rican politician. He served as the President of Costa Rica from 2002 to 2006. He was a member of the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC). He won the election by promising to continue free market changes and to save money for the government.

Who is Abel Pacheco?
Abel Pacheco is a well-known figure in Costa Rica. Before becoming president, he had a diverse career. He was a medical doctor, a popular TV presenter, a university teacher, and even a shop owner. He also wrote books and songs.
His Early Life and Family
Abel Pacheco was born in San José, Costa Rica. He had five children with his first wife, Elsa María Muñoz Batha. Their children are Abel, Elsa, Yolanda, Sergio, and Valeria. Later, in 1975, he married Leila Rodríguez Stahl. She was a former Miss Costa Rica. They have one son named Fabian.
His Career Journey
Abel Pacheco is a medical doctor. He studied psychiatry at Louisiana State University. In the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, he became very popular on Costa Rican television. He hosted short programs that many people enjoyed.
During this time, he also taught at the University of Costa Rica. He owned a clothing store in downtown San José called El Palacio del Pantalón. He also wrote several novels and popular songs.
Becoming a Politician
On February 1, 1998, Abel Pacheco was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. This is like the country's parliament. He represented the San José province for the PUSC party.
In 2001, his party chose him as their candidate for president. He won with a large majority of votes from the party members. This showed that many people in the party supported him.
In the first round of the 2002 presidential election, he received 38.6% of the votes. This was just under the 40% needed to win right away. So, a second round of voting was held. On April 7, 2002, Pacheco won the second round with 58% of the votes. He defeated Rolando Araya of the PLN. This was the first time Costa Rica used a second round of voting for president.
His Books and Awards
Abel Pacheco has written many books. These include both fiction stories and non-fiction works. Some of his books are "Paso de tropa" (published in 1969) and "Más abajo de la piel" (published in 1972). His writings have been translated into more than 20 languages. This shows how important his work is to Costa Rican culture.
He has received several awards for his contributions to literature and culture. He was given the "Citizen of the World" prize. This award recognizes people who have made major contributions to culture and arts globally. He also received the National Literature Prize for his book "Mas abajo de la piel."
Honours
Abel Pacheco has received several honors from different countries and organizations. These awards recognize his achievements and contributions.
