Abelox (also called Abelux or Abilyx) was an important person from ancient Hispania, which is now Spain. He lived in the late 200s BC. At first, he seemed to be a friend of Carthage, a powerful empire.
Who Was Abelox?
Abelox was a noble, meaning he came from an important family. He lived during a time when Carthage and Rome were fighting for control. These big wars are known as the Punic Wars.
A Secret Plan
Abelox acted like he was loyal to the Carthaginians. He pretended to be their friend and supporter. However, he was actually more interested in helping the Romans. He had a secret plan to switch sides.
The Hostages of Saguntum
The Carthaginians had taken many important people from the city of Saguntum as hostages. These hostages were kept to make sure Saguntum stayed loyal. Abelox saw a chance to help the Romans.
He tricked Bostar, who was a Carthaginian commander. Abelox convinced Bostar that he should move the hostages to a different, safer place. Bostar trusted Abelox and agreed to his plan.
The Betrayal
While the hostages were being moved, Abelox secretly worked with the Roman generals. These generals were Publius Cornelius Scipio and Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus. They were brothers and important Roman leaders.
Abelox helped the Romans capture the hostages. This was a big blow to the Carthaginians. It also helped the Romans gain support from the people of Hispania. Abelox's actions showed that he was very clever and willing to betray his supposed friends for his own goals.
