About Safety was a children's TV show that started in 1972. It was made by the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television (MAETV). Each episode was short, lasting about 3 to 6 minutes.

The show used puppets to teach kids important lessons. The most famous puppet was Clyde Frog. He helped children learn about being safe and how to give first aid. Clyde was a bit mischievous and often got into funny situations. This helped the show explain different dangers. These included things like traffic, fire, and even tornadoes.

About Safety had 47 episodes and was very popular. MAETV shared the show with TV stations all over the United States.

The character of Clyde Frog also appeared in another MAETV show called Clyde Frog Show. This show taught kids about self-esteem and feelings. Later, an animated version of Clyde Frog was even featured in some episodes of the cartoon South Park as a favorite toy.

Learning Important Lessons

The main goal of About Safety was to teach kids how to stay safe. The Mississippi Public Broadcasting School Resource Guide explains this well. It says that Clyde Frog and his puppet friends learned about safety at school, fire safety, and first aid.

The lessons were designed to help elementary school children learn how to live safely. The puppets acted out different situations. These showed why safety rules are important. They also demonstrated both safe and unsafe activities.

What Kids Learned by Grade

The show had specific learning goals for different age groups:

For Kindergarteners

  • They learned to show safe behavior in their daily activities.

For First Graders

  • They understood why first aid and emergency help are important.
  • They learned ways to prevent accidents.
  • They found out why safety on the school bus and playground matters.

For Second Graders

  • They learned about what could happen if accidents occur.

For Third Graders

  • They could identify safety steps to follow during natural events like storms or other big emergencies.
