Abraham Hazeley was born in 1784 and lived until 1847. He was part of a group known as the Nova Scotian Settlers. These were people who moved from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone. Abraham Hazeley is remembered for founding a very important family in Sierra Leone.
His Family's Journey
Abraham Hazeley Junior was born in a place called Birchtown, in Nova Scotia. His parents were Abraham Hazeley and Martha 'Patty' Hazeley.
Abraham Hazeley Senior
Abraham Hazeley Senior, his father, was born in Charleston, South Carolina (1754–1809). He was one of many African Americans who moved to Nova Scotia in 1783. This move happened after the American Revolutionary War. Many Black Loyalists, who had supported the British, were promised freedom and land in Nova Scotia.
The Move to Sierra Leone
Later, many of these settlers, including Abraham Hazeley and his family, moved from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone. They were looking for a new home where they could have more freedom and opportunities. They helped build the new colony of Sierra Leone.
The Creole People
The descendants of these settlers, like Abraham Hazeley's family, became known as the Creole people of Sierra Leone. They played a big role in shaping the culture and history of the country.
