The Acacia aphanoclada, also known as the Nullagine ghost wattle, is a type of shrub. It belongs to the Acacia family, which is a large group of plants. This special wattle plant is found in a small area of Western Australia, in a region called the Pilbara.

What Does the Nullagine Ghost Wattle Look Like?

This shrub stands tall and can look quite thin and wispy. It usually grows to be about 1.7 to 5 meters (about 5 to 16 feet) high. When it blooms, from August to October, it shows off pretty yellow flowers.

Most Nullagine ghost wattles have just one main stem. Sometimes, though, they can have up to three main stems growing from the ground. These stems are usually quite thin, about 1 to 2 centimeters (less than an inch) wide. The plant's leaves are mostly found at the ends of its thin, drooping branches, making the top look a bit sparse.

How Did It Get Its Name?

A botanist named Bruce Maslin first officially described this plant in 1992. He gave it the scientific name Acacia aphanoclada.

The second part of its name, aphanoclada, comes from two Greek words. Aphanēs means "unseen" or "invisible," and klados means "branch." This name refers to how thin and spindly the branches of this plant are, almost like they're hard to see!

Where Does the Nullagine Ghost Wattle Grow?

You can find the Nullagine ghost wattle spread out in a few spots near the small town of Nullagine. This is north of Newman, in the Pilbara region of northwestern Western Australia.

It often grows on rocky hills, slopes, and rises. The soil there is usually thin and rocky. This shrub typically grows alongside other plants like Eucalyptus trees and other Acacia species, often in areas with spiky Spinifex grasses.
