About the Academie Brochu
The Academie Brochu stands on the east side of Pine Street. It is south of Hamilton Street in the center of Southbridge. This building has three stories and is made of brick. It sits on a strong stone base. The roof is shaped like a hip roof.
Its Design and History
The building's red brick walls look nice with its limestone and yellow brick details. There is also a metal trim and a decorative band just below the roof. The academy was built in 1899. It was designed by a company called Chickering & O'Connell from Springfield.
The school was built in the Colonial Revival style. This style was chosen to serve the many French Canadian people moving to Southbridge.
Who Was Msgr. Brochu?
The academy was named after Msgr. George Elzear Brochu. He was the pastor, or leader, of the Notre Dame Church. Msgr. Brochu gave his own money to help build the school.
What Happened Inside?
The Academie Brochu served as the parish school for Notre Dame Parish. At first, the Sisters of St. Anne ran the school. Later, the Sisters of the Assumption from Nicolet, Quebec took over. The school itself had started in 1881. By the late 1890s, it really needed a proper building.
The academy building has six classrooms on its first two floors. On the third floor, there is a large chapel. This chapel is big enough for all the students in the school. The Colonial Revival style of the building is different from the church next door. However, it is still one of the most impressive buildings in the town.
