The Achatinella abbreviata was a type of colorful snail that lived in trees on the island of Oʻahu. It was an air-breathing land snail. Sadly, this species is now extinct, meaning it no longer exists. It belonged to a group of snails known as Oʻahu tree snails.

About the Shell

The shell of the Achatinella abbreviata was shaped like an egg. It had a slightly swollen middle part. The shell also had six spiral turns, called whorls.

The top part of the shell, called the spire, was quite short. It had a rounded tip, which is the apex. The central pillar inside the shell, known as the columella, was thick and twisted.

The shell had beautiful colors. It was mostly olive-yellow. There was a black-brown line where the whorls joined, which are called sutures. The bottom part of the last whorl was a very dark green. The very tip of the shell was black.

This snail's shell was about 19.0 millimeters (0.75 inches) tall. It was about 10.0 millimeters (0.39 inches) wide.

Where it Lived

This snail species was endemic to the Hawaiʻian island of Oʻahu. This means it naturally lived only on Oʻahu and nowhere else in the world.

Why it's Extinct

The Achatinella abbreviata is now considered extinct. This means that all of these snails have died out, and there are none left alive. The IUCN Red List, which tracks the conservation status of species around the world, first listed this snail as extinct in 1990.
