Meet the Oʻahu Tree Snail
This snail is unique because it is endemic to Hawaii. This means it naturally lives nowhere else in the world. Achatinella bulimoides is a species that has adapted to life on the Hawaiian islands.
What Does Its Shell Look Like?
The shell of Achatinella bulimoides is shaped like an egg, but a bit longer and slightly swollen. It can spiral either to the right (called dextral) or to the left (called sinistral). The shell has about six and a quarter spirals, which are the turns of the shell.
The top part of the shell, called the spire, is not very thick and comes to a point at the very top, known as the apex. The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is usually white. The line between the spirals, called the suture, does not have a very deep groove.
Shell Colors and Patterns
The shell of Achatinella bulimoides can be whitish with brown stripes. Sometimes, the main color of the shell is a pale brown or rusty brown, also with darker stripes. Other snails of this species can be completely pure white.
The shell of this snail is about 21.3 millimeters (0.84 inches) tall. It is about 11.8 millimeters (0.46 inches) wide.
The Achatinella rosea Variety
Achatinella rosea is a special type, or variety, of Achatinella bulimoides. This variety was also described by Swainson in 1828. Its shell is usually a pale pink color. It often has two faint white stripes.
This pink variety has about six and a third spirals. The edge of the shell's opening and the inner part (called the columella) are a deeper pink color. The opening itself is white. A clear groove can be seen just below the spiral line on this variety.
The Achatinella rosea shell is a bit taller and wider than the typical Achatinella bulimoides. It measures about 22.3 millimeters (0.88 inches) in height and 13.5 millimeters (0.53 inches) in width.
