Ackerville is a small, unincorporated community located in Wilcox County, Alabama, in the United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. One important historical building here is the Ackerville Baptist Church of Christ, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This makes it a special site recognized for its history.
History
The community of Ackerville was named after the Acker family, who lived in the area. A post office was opened in Ackerville in 1892. This helped people send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1940.
Geography
Ackerville is located at a specific point on the map. Its coordinates are about 32.030 degrees North and 87.066 degrees West. The community sits at an elevation of about 87 meters (which is 285 feet) above sea level.
How Many People Lived Here?
Ackerville itself has never had its population counted separately by the U.S. Census. However, a larger area around it, called the 19th precinct of Wilcox County, was named Ackerville. This precinct was counted in the U.S. Census from 1900 to 1950.
Here's how the population of the Ackerville Precinct changed over those years:
Historical population | |||
---|---|---|---|
Census | Pop. | %± | |
1900 | 1,376 | — | |
1910 | 1,240 | −9.9% | |
1920 | 1,291 | 4.1% | |
1930 | 500 | −61.3% | |
1940 | 459 | −8.2% | |
1950 | 398 | −13.3% | |

You can see the number of people living in the precinct changed quite a bit. After 1950, the way counties were organized changed. In 1960, the precincts were combined and reorganized into new areas called census divisions. The Ackerville precinct became part of the census division for Pine Apple.
