The Acme-McCrary Hosiery Mills is a group of historic factory buildings in Asheboro, North Carolina. This place was once a very important factory that made hosiery, which are like socks and stockings. It is also known by names like Acme Hosiery Mills and McCrary Hosiery Mills.

The buildings were built between 1909 and 1962. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means they are recognized as important historical sites in the United States.

A Look Inside the Mills

The Acme-McCrary Hosiery Mills complex includes six main buildings and a tall smokestack. The oldest part of the factory was built in 1909. It has two stories and strong brick walls. The buildings were designed by an architect named Richard C. Biberstein.

One special building is the Acme-McCrary-Sapona Recreation Center. It was built in 1948–1949. This two-story building has a unique design called Art Moderne style. It was a place for workers to relax and have fun.

The Story of Acme-McCrary

The company started as Acme Hosiery Mills. In 1909, two brothers-in-law, D.B. McCrary and T.H. Redding, bought the company. They changed its name and helped it grow a lot.

Acme-McCrary became one of the biggest makers of hosiery in the world. They made socks and stockings for many different brands. At one point, they were the third-largest producer of "private label" hosiery. This means they made products that other companies sold under their own names.

In 2017, a company from Sri Lanka called MAS Capital bought the production part of Acme-McCrary. However, Acme-McCrary kept the historic buildings in Asheboro. These buildings then became home to only their main offices. The company later planned to move out of these old buildings. This would open up a large space in downtown Asheboro for new businesses or homes.
