Acmispon decumbens is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the Fabaceae family, also known as the pea or bean family. This plant grows naturally in parts of Nevada, California, and northeastern Mexico.
A scientist named George Bentham first described this plant in 1836. He originally called it Hosackia decumbens.
About the Plant
This plant can be found in different environments. It grows in mountain forests and open meadows. Acmispon decumbens is a perennial herb. This means it's a non-woody plant that lives for more than two years.
What it Looks Like
The plant spreads out or forms a mat on the ground. It has long, soft hairs covering its stems and leaves. Its leaves are made up of several small, green, oval-shaped leaflets.
Flowers and Fruit
The plant produces clusters of flowers. Each cluster can have up to 12 flowers. These flowers are pinkish-yellow and look a bit like small peas. Each flower is about a centimeter (or a little less than half an inch) long.
After the flowers bloom, the plant produces fruit. The fruit is a thin, curved pod. This pod is a type of legume, which is typical for plants in the pea family.
Plant Varieties
Scientists recognize two main types, or varieties, of Acmispon decumbens. A variety is a group of plants within a species that has small differences.
