The Acorales are a special group of flowering plants. They are also known as the sweet flag order. These plants are among the very first types of monocotyledons to appear. Monocotyledons are plants that have only one seed leaf when they first sprout.
This plant order includes just one family, called Acoraceae. Within this family, there is only one genus, named Acorus. There are about two to four different kinds of plants in the Acorus genus. These plants often look a lot like irises.
Acorus plants are often found growing in freshwater environments. Some types of Acorus are even considered edible. This means parts of them can be eaten.
