Acqua Minerale San Benedetto S.p.A. is a big Italian company located in Scorzè, near Venice. It makes many different non-alcoholic drinks, like mineral water and soft drinks (both fizzy and still). You can find their products in Italy and all around the world.

San Benedetto has many factories. Six are in Italy, two in Spain, one in Poland, and one in Hungary. In 2018, about 1,953 people worked for the company worldwide. In Italy, they had 44 bottling lines. This means they could fill about 4.49 billion bottles every year! The Zoppas family owns and controls the company.

History of San Benedetto

The first factory for bottling mineral water started in 1956. It was built in Scorzè by two brothers, Bruno and Ermenegildo Scattolin. They owned a food shop and the land where the San Benedetto and Guizza springs were found. The company got its name from the San Benedetto spring. This spring was known for its healthy water even back in the days of the Venetian Republic.

In 1959, the company became a "joint-stock company." This means its ownership was divided into shares. The Scattolin family still owned most of the company. But the Zoppas family, who were distant relatives, bought 33% of the shares. At that time, the Zoppas family was growing their own company that made home appliances. Augusto Zoppas became the president of San Benedetto.

In 1971, the Zoppas family bought the majority of San Benedetto's shares. This happened when their home appliance company was having some problems. Enrico Zoppas became the Managing Director. Giuliano De Polo, who was Augusto Zoppas's son-in-law, became the President. Later, in 2004, Enrico Zoppas also became the President after De Polo passed away.

How San Benedetto Grew

In 1984, San Benedetto made a deal with Cadbury Schweppes International. This allowed them to make and sell all Schweppes drinks in Italy. Four years later, in 1988, they signed another agreement with PepsiCo. This meant San Benedetto could produce and sell Pepsi and 7 Up drinks in Italy too.

In 1995, a new factory opened in Popoli. Here, they started bottling Guizza Fonte Valle Reale mineral water. The company also launched a new sport drink called Energade.

In the early 2000s, San Benedetto worked with Danone. Together, they started two companies: Polska Woda in Poland and Magyarviz Kft. in Hungary. In 2002, San Benedetto also signed a deal to make and package Coca-Cola products for the European market.

By 2006, some members of the Zoppas family (Enrico, Gianfranco, Renzo, Maria Teresa, Sara, Federico, and Matteo) bought all the shares from other family members. This made them the only owners of the main company, Finanziaria San Benedetto.

In 2010, San Benedetto bought the remaining 50% of the companies in Poland and Hungary from Danone. This made San Benedetto the full owner of these companies. In 2014, San Benedetto built another new factory in Viggianello. This factory bottles San Benedetto mineral water from the beautiful Pollino National Park.
