History of San Benedetto
How the Company Started
The first factory for bottling mineral water from the San Benedetto and Guizza springs opened in 1956. It was in a town called Scorzè, Italy. Two brothers, Bruno and Ermenegildo Scattolin, started the company. They owned a food shop and the land where the spring was found. The company got its name from the San Benedetto spring. This spring was famous for its healthy water even long ago, during the time of the Venetian Republic.
In 1959, the company became a "joint-stock company." This means it could sell parts of the company to others. The Scattolin family still owned most of it. But the Zoppas family, who were distant relatives, bought 33% of the company. The Zoppas family was also growing their own household appliance business at that time. Augusto Zoppas became the president of San Benedetto.
New Leadership and Growth
By 1971, the Zoppas family bought most of San Benedetto. This happened when their household appliance company was having some problems. Enrico Zoppas became the Managing Director. Giuliano De Polo, who was Augusto Zoppas's son-in-law, became the President. Enrico Zoppas later became president in 2004, after De Polo passed away.
Expanding Products and Brands
San Benedetto started to grow even more in the 1980s.
- In 1984, the company made a deal with Cadbury Schweppes International. This allowed San Benedetto to make and sell all Schweppes drinks in Italy.
- In 1988, they signed another agreement, this time with PepsiCo. This meant San Benedetto could produce and sell Pepsi and 7 Up drinks in Italy.
New Factories and Drinks
In 1995, San Benedetto opened a new factory in Popoli, Italy. There, they bottled Guizza Fonte Valle Reale mineral water. The company also launched a new sport drink called Energade.
In the early 2000s, San Benedetto worked with another company called Danone. Together, they started two new companies: Polska Woda in Poland and Magyarviz Kft. in Hungary. In 2002, San Benedetto also signed a deal to make and package Coca-Cola products for the European market.
Full Family Ownership
In 2006, several members of the Zoppas family made an agreement. They bought all the shares from other family members. This meant they owned 100% of the main company, Finanziaria San Benedetto. This company is in charge of the whole San Benedetto Mineral Water Group.
In 2010, San Benedetto bought the remaining 50% of the companies in Poland and Hungary from Danone. This made San Benedetto the only owner of those companies. In 2014, San Benedetto built another new factory in Viggianello, Italy. This factory bottles San Benedetto mineral water from the Pollino National Park.
