What's in a Name? The Meaning of Acuitzio
The name "Acuitzio" comes from the Purépecha language. This was the language spoken by the native people of the region. In Purépecha, "Acuitzio" means "place of snakes."
Why "del Canje"?
The second part of the name, "del Canje," means "of the exchange." This part was added because of a special event. On December 5, 1865, during the French Intervention in Mexico, an exchange of war prisoners happened in the town.
Later, on December 16, 1901, the State Congress officially changed the town's name. They added "del Canje" to remember this important historical moment.
A Glimpse into Acuitzio's History
The area where Acuitzio del Canje is located has a long history. People lived here even before the Spanish arrived in Mexico. This time is called "pre-Hispanic times."
By the year 1620, Acuitzio was a small community. It had about 20 families living there. There was also a hospital in the community.
After Mexico gained its independence, a local government was set up in Acuitzio. This type of local government is called an ayuntamiento. It helped manage the town's affairs.
