Adela of Champagne (born around 1140 – died June 4, 1206) was a powerful French queen. She was the third wife of King Louis VII of France. Adela was also known by other names, like Adelaide or Alix. She played an important role in French history during the 12th and early 13th centuries.

Who Was Queen Adela of Champagne?

Adela was born around 1140 in Blois, France. Her father was Theobald II, Count of Champagne, a powerful noble. Her mother was Matilda of Carinthia. Adela was named after her grandmother, Adela of Normandy.

Becoming Queen of France

Adela married King Louis VII of France on October 18, 1160. She became the Queen consort of France. A queen consort is the wife of a reigning king. She shares his title but does not rule in her own right.

Adela's Children

Adela and Louis VII had two children together. Their son was Philip II of France, who later became king. Philip was very important because he was Louis VII's only son. This meant he would inherit the throne. Their daughter was Agnes, who later became an empress in the Byzantine Empire.

Life as a Queen and Regent

When King Louis VII died in 1180, Adela's son, Philip, became the new king. He was known as King Philip II.

Later, in 1190, King Philip II went away on the Third Crusade. The Crusades were a series of religious wars fought in the Middle Ages. While Philip was away, Queen Adela acted as a regent. A regent is someone who governs a country when the king or queen is too young, ill, or absent. Adela helped manage the kingdom during this time.

Later Life and Death

Queen Adela died on June 4, 1206, in Paris, France. She was buried in the church of Pontigny Abbey, which is near Auxerre.
