History of the Homestead
The main house at the Adam Fisher Homestead was built around 1837. It is a two-story building made of brick. The house has five sections, called bays, and a strong foundation made of cut sandstone.
What is Federal Architecture?
The house was built in a style called Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1830. It often features simple, balanced designs. Buildings in this style usually have a grand and formal look. The Adam Fisher Homestead is a good example of this style. It shows how people built homes in Pennsylvania during that time.
Farm Buildings
Besides the main house, the homestead also has several other important buildings. These are called outbuildings. They helped the farm run smoothly.
- Smokehouse / Bake Oven / Coalhouse: This building had three uses. It was used for smoking meats, baking bread, and storing coal.
- Summer Kitchen / Wash House: This building was used for cooking during hot weather. It also served as a place to do laundry.
- Cooper's Shed: A cooper is someone who makes or repairs wooden barrels and tubs. This shed was where a cooper would work.
These buildings show us the many daily tasks that took place on a farm in the 1800s.
National Recognition
The Adam Fisher Homestead is so special that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
