Adam Olsen (born January 10, 1976) is a Canadian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. This is like being a representative for a specific area. He represented the area called Saanich North and the Islands. He was part of the Green Party of British Columbia until 2024.
Adam Olsen's Political Journey
Adam Olsen became a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2017 provincial election. This means people in his area, Saanich North and the Islands, voted for him. He had run for the same position before, in the 2013 provincial election. He almost won that time, but lost by a small number of votes.
After the 2013 election, he became the interim leader of the Green Party. An interim leader is someone who leads a group for a short time. They lead until a new, permanent leader is chosen. He took over after Jane Sterk stepped down and before Andrew Weaver became the new leader.
Working in a Minority Government
In the 2017 election, no single political party won enough seats to form a government on their own. This is called a minority government. It was the first time this happened in British Columbia since 1952.
- The Liberal Party won 43 seats.
- The New Democratic Party (NDP) won 41 seats.
- The Green Party won three seats.
Since no party had a clear majority, the Green Party became very important. Both the Liberal Party and the NDP talked to the Green Party. They wanted to see if the Greens would help them form a government.
On May 29, the leader of the NDP, John Horgan, and the Green Party leader, Andrew Weaver, made an announcement. They said the Green Party would support an NDP minority government. This means the Greens would vote with the NDP on important issues. This agreement was approved by members of both parties the next day.
Leading the Green Party
On October 7, 2019, Andrew Weaver announced he would step down as the Green Party leader. He said he would stay until a new leader was chosen. On December 20, 2019, Adam Olsen was chosen as the interim leader again. He officially started this role on January 6, 2020.
Adam Olsen is also a member of the Tsartlip First Nation. This community is located in Brentwood Bay. Before he became a member of the Legislative Assembly, he served as a councillor for Central Saanich. He was a councillor for two terms, helping to make decisions for his local community.
