Adamantisaurus ( AD-ə-man-ti-SAWR-əs) is a type of dinosaur that lived in what is now Brazil. Its name means "Adamantina lizard," referring to the Adamantina Formation where its fossils were found. This dinosaur was a sauropod, which means it was a very large plant-eating dinosaur with a long neck and tail.
Scientists believe Adamantisaurus was a titanosaur, a group of huge sauropods. It lived during the Late Cretaceous period, which was about 100 to 66 million years ago.
What We Know About Adamantisaurus
We don't know a lot about Adamantisaurus because only a few bones have been found. So far, scientists have only discovered six tail vertebrae (bones from the tail). These bones help us understand that it was a sauropod, but they don't tell us much about its exact size or appearance.
Because it was a sauropod, we can guess that Adamantisaurus was a very large animal. It likely had a long neck to reach high leaves and a long tail for balance. Most sauropods walked on four thick, pillar-like legs.
Where It Lived
The fossils of Adamantisaurus were found in Brazil, in a place called the Adamantina Formation. This area was part of a large continent called Gondwana during the Late Cretaceous period. The environment back then was likely warm and lush, with plenty of plants for large dinosaurs like Adamantisaurus to eat.
