Adams Island is a cool place! It's the second biggest island in the Auckland Islands, which are a group of islands belonging to New Zealand.
Island Geography
Adams Island is shaped a bit like a triangle. It's separated from the main Auckland Island by a narrow waterway. This waterway is called Carnley Harbour or the Adams Straits.
Adams Island is very mountainous. Its highest point is Mount Dick, which is about 705 meters (2,313 feet) tall. The channel between Adams Island and Auckland Island is actually what's left of an old volcano crater. Adams Island and the southern part of Auckland Island form the edge of this ancient crater.
The island's south coast has two big bays. These are Bolton's Bay and Fly Harbour. Both of these bays are found in the southeast part of the island.
Important Bird Area
Adams Island is part of a special place called an Important Bird Area (IBA). BirdLife International has named the Auckland Island group an IBA. This is because many different kinds of seabirds come here to have their babies.
Some unique birds live here too. These include the Auckland shag, Auckland teal, Auckland rail, and Auckland snipe. These birds are endemic, meaning they are only found in this specific area.
What makes Adams Island extra special is that no new animals have ever settled there. This means animals like pigs, cats, or mice have never lived on Adams Island. Because of this, the wildlife on Adams Island is very much like it was before humans arrived. This is different from many other islands in the area, including the main Auckland Island, which does have some introduced animals.
