The Adams Memorial Building is a very old and important building in Derry, New Hampshire. It's also known as the Derry Opera House. This special building was built way back in 1904. It looks like a grand old house, even though Derry was a small town then.

When it was first built, the building held different town offices and the local library. Today, people still use its theater, called the "opera house," for fun local events. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. A local group that supports arts now runs the theater.

Discovering the Adams Memorial Building

The Adams Memorial Building is located in the center of Derry. You can find it on West Broadway, right where Maple Street meets it. It's a two-story building made of strong brick. It also has fancy parts made of granite and wood.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The building has special stone lines that separate its floors. The roof has a detailed edge called a cornice. The front of the building has three main sections. These sections are separated by brick columns called pilasters. These columns have stone tops.

The main door is in the middle section. It's set back inside a round arch. This arch has a fancy frame with columns. The windows on the top floor are also large and round. On the left side, facing Maple Street, there's a small, round section that sticks out.

A Look Back at Its History

A famous architect named George G. Adams from Lawrence, Massachusetts, designed this building. It was finished in 1904. Back then, Derry was a pretty small town. It had about 3,600 people in 1920. So, this building was unusually grand for its size.

The building first held many town offices. It also had the town's library. The theater on the upper floor was used for local shows and gatherings. The building was damaged by fire two times. This happened in 1914 and again in 1927. After these fires, parts of the inside had to be rebuilt.
