The Adams Woodframe Grain Elevator was a tall building in Adams, Oklahoma. It was used to store grain, mostly wheat, from local farms. This elevator was built in 1926 by the Tex-Co Grain Company. This was the same year the community of Adams itself was started.

For many years, the elevator helped farmers. It allowed them to ship their crops by train. The grain went to big markets in places like Fort Worth, Texas or Galveston, Texas. The elevator worked continuously from when it opened until at least 1983. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 13, 1983. Sadly, it was later burned down around August 22, 2018, due to safety concerns.

What Did It Look Like?

The Adams Woodframe Grain Elevator was a very tall building. It was about 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide and 70 feet (21 meters) high. It had a wooden frame. The outside was covered with wavy metal sheets called corrugated metal siding. These sheets were attached to strong wooden beams. The roof was also made of corrugated metal.

Parts of the Elevator

  • The side facing the railroad tracks had a single door.
  • It also had a special spout for loading grain.
  • There were two windows, one above the other, in the upper part of the building.
  • Two smaller sheds were attached to the south side.
  • One shed had a double sliding door. This shed was used to store tools and equipment.
  • The other shed had a double swinging door. This was where farmers unloaded grain from their wagons and trucks.
  • The west side looked similar to the east side, but it did not have a loading spout.
  • The north side had a double sliding exit door. It also had four windows, arranged in two pairs.

Why Was It Taken Down?

In 2017, people noticed that the old grain elevator was leaning. It was tilting towards the north. Strong winds on the prairie likely caused this lean. This leaning had been happening since the 1980s. Around that time, the railroad tracks nearby were removed. Also, a grain truck once fell through the elevator's floor.

Because of these problems, the building became unsafe. It was officially declared dangerous in 2017. To prevent accidents, the elevator was burned down on August 22, 2018.
