Adaza is a small, unincorporated community located in Greene County, Iowa, in the United States. It's not an official city or town, but rather a small settlement. You can find Adaza on County Road E13, about three miles northwest of the town of Churdan.

History of Adaza

How Adaza Started

Adaza was founded a long time ago, in 1881. It was set up in a part of Highland Township. A big step for the community was when a branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad was built right through Adaza. This railroad helped connect the community to other places.

Name Change and Early Buildings

When it first started, Adaza was known by a different name: Cottonwood. But in 1882, a person named Captain Albert Head visited the area and decided to rename it Adaza. A few years later, in 1892, the very first store opened in Adaza. This was an important place for people to buy what they needed. In 1899, a larger building for the railroad, called a depot, was built.

Challenges and Growth

Life in Adaza wasn't always easy. In 1902, a powerful tornado swept through the area. It caused a lot of damage and destroyed several farms nearby. Despite this, the community continued to grow. In the same year, 1902, two churches were built in Adaza: the Church of Christ and the Methodist Episcopal church. Sadly, the Methodist church was damaged by a fire and had to be rebuilt in 1907.

Population and Future Plans

Over the years, Adaza's population changed. In 1902, about 25 people lived there. By 1925, the number dropped to 18. However, the population grew significantly to 100 people by 1940. In 1907, the people of Adaza thought about becoming an official city. But in the end, Adaza was never officially incorporated.
