Adelaide of Merania (also known as Alice or Alix) was a powerful noblewoman. She was the reigning Countess of Burgundy from 1248 until her death in 1279. She also became the Countess of Savoy and Bresse when she married Count Philip I of Savoy in 1267.
Who Was Adelaide of Merania?
Adelaide was born into an important family. Her father was Duke Otto I of Merania. Her mother was Countess Beatrice II of Burgundy. This meant Adelaide was part of a noble family with a lot of land and influence.
Her Life as a Countess
Adelaide became the Countess of Burgundy in 1248. She inherited this important title after her brother, Otto III, Count Palatine of Burgundy, passed away. Being a countess meant she was the ruler of a large area called a county. She had to manage its lands, people, and laws.
During her time as countess, Adelaide had some disagreements. She even had a conflict with King Rudolph I. This shows she was a strong leader who stood up for her county.
Adelaide passed away on March 8, 1279, in Évian. She was buried in a place called Cherlieu Abbey, which is near Besançon.
Her Family and Marriages
Adelaide was married twice during her life. Her first marriage was around 1239 to Hugh, Count of Salins. He came from a noble family connected to the Counts of Burgundy.
Adelaide and Hugh had several children together. Their most notable child was Otto IV, Count of Burgundy. He later became a count himself. They also had other children, including Reginald, John, Guia, Hugh, Police, and Elizabeth.
Later, on June 11, 1267, Adelaide married Philip. Philip was a former archbishop who became the Count of Savoy the next year. This marriage did not result in any children.
