Becoming Count of Burgundy
Otto was the son of Hugh of Châlons and Adelaide, Countess Palatine of Burgundy. When his father died around 1266 or 1267, Otto became the Count of Châlons.
His mother, Adelaide, was the Countess of Burgundy. When she passed away on March 8, 1279, Otto inherited her title. This made him the new Count of Burgundy. However, it took him a while to gain full control. He wasn't able to secure real power in the county until 1295.
Otto's oldest daughter, Joan II, later took over the County of Burgundy. This land was eventually given as a special gift when she married Philip, who would become the King of France.
Otto's Tomb
Otto's second wife, Mahaut, planned a special tomb for him. On June 4, 1312, she made a deal with a famous tomb maker named Jean Pepin de Huy. The contract said the tomb would be made from stone and alabaster.
Otto was to be shown as a brave knight, wearing armor and holding a shield and sword. A lion was to be placed beneath his feet. Two angels would support the pillow under his head. Sadly, this beautiful tomb no longer exists today. However, the original designs for it have been saved.
Family Life and Children
Otto IV was married twice during his life.
First Marriage
In 1271, Otto married his first wife, Philippa of Bar. They did not have any children together.
Second Marriage and Heirs
In 1285, Otto married his second wife, Mahaut of Artois. They had three children who grew up to be important figures:
- Joan (born around 1291, died 1330). She married Philip, Count of Poitiers in 1307. Philip later became the King of France.
- Blanche (born around 1296, died 1326). She married Charles, Count of La Marche. Charles also later became the King of France.
- Robert (born around 1300, died 1317).
