Adelelm (died February 25, 1179), also known as Adelmus or Ascelinus, was an important person in England during the 1100s. He held several key positions, including being the Treasurer of England, which was like being in charge of the country's money. He was also a church leader, serving as the Archdeacon of Dorset and later the Dean of Lincoln. Adelelm was the nephew of Roger, who was a powerful Bishop of Salisbury.
Adelelm's Important Roles
Adelelm had a career that combined both government and church duties. He was trusted with managing the country's finances and also held significant positions within the church.
Managing the King's Money
Adelelm became the Treasurer of England around 1136. This was a very important job, as the Treasurer was responsible for looking after the king's money and making sure the royal accounts were in order. It was like being the chief financial officer for the entire country!
He took over this role from a person named Nigel. Adelelm served as Treasurer during the reign of King Stephen. However, his time as Treasurer was short. He was removed from this position in 1139, and Nigel was appointed Treasurer again.
Church Leadership
Besides his role in the government, Adelelm was also a dedicated churchman. He held several important positions within the church:
- Archdeacon of Dorset: Before 1139, Adelelm became the Archdeacon of Dorset. An archdeacon is a senior church official who helps the bishop manage the churches and clergy in a specific area, called an archdeaconry. Adelelm held this position for a long time, until after 1173.
- Dean of Lincoln: Later, before 1145, Adelelm became the Dean of Lincoln. The Dean is the head of the chapter of canons at a cathedral. The chapter is a group of clergy who help run the cathedral and perform religious services. Lincoln Cathedral was a very important church, so being its Dean was a high honor. He served as Dean until after 1173.
- Prebendary of Aylesbury: During his time as Treasurer, it seems Adelelm was also made a prebendary of Aylesbury. A prebendary was a type of canon who received income from a specific piece of land or property (called a prebend) belonging to the church.
Adelelm passed away on February 25, 1179.
