Scientific classification

The Adelphicos ibarrorum is a special kind of snake that belongs to the colubrid family. These snakes are found only in Guatemala, which means they are endemic to that country. They live in the highlands of south-central Guatemala, especially around a place called Chichicastenango.

This snake is known as a fossorial snake. This means it spends most of its time living underground or burrowing in the soil. It likes to live in pine-oak forests and at the edges of these forests. You can find them at high places, usually between 2,000 and 2,100 meters (about 6,560 to 6,890 feet) above sea level.

About the Guatemalan Earth Snake

The Adelphicos ibarrorum is sometimes called the Guatemalan Earth Snake because it lives underground. It's a unique creature that helps us understand the amazing variety of life on Earth.

What Does It Look Like?

The biggest Adelphicos ibarrorum ever found was a female snake. It measured about 521 millimeters (or 20.5 inches) long. This measurement includes its tail, which was about 58 millimeters (or 2.3 inches) long. Scientists study these snakes to learn more about their size and how they grow.

Where Does It Live?

This snake is found only in a specific part of Guatemala. The place where it was first discovered and described by scientists is called its type locality. For this snake, that area is near Chichicastenango in the highlands.

Why Is It Important?

The forests where the Adelphicos ibarrorum lives are very important. Sadly, these forests are being cut down to make space for farms. This is called deforestation. When their homes are destroyed, it makes it harder for these snakes to survive. Because of this, the Adelphicos ibarrorum is considered a threatened species.
