Joining the Fight for Independence
In February 1944, Aden Abdulle Osman Daar joined a group called the Somali Youth Club. This group later changed its name to the Somali Youth League. It was a political party that wanted Somalia to be free from foreign rule. They worked to make Somalia an independent country.
Daar quickly became an important member of this group. He joined their main leadership team. In 1946, he was chosen to be the secretary for one part of the party. He also served as the chairman of the Somali Youth League for several years, from 1954 to 1956, and again from 1958 to 1959. In 1956, he was elected to lead the Legislative Assembly, which was like a parliament.
Becoming Somalia's First President
Somalia gained its independence on July 1, 1960. This was a huge moment for the country. After independence, Aden Abdulle Osman Daar was chosen to be the first President of Somalia. He led the country during its early years as a new nation.
He served as president until June 10, 1967. In the presidential election that year, he was not re-elected. Abdirashid Ali Shermarke won the election and became the next president. Daar peacefully handed over power, which was an important example for democracy in Somalia.
