The Admiral David Glasgow Farragut Gravesite is the special burial place of David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870). He was a very important leader in the United States Navy. Farragut was the first person to reach the highest ranks in the Navy, like rear admiral, vice admiral, and four-star admiral.

He is most famous for his brave order during a battle: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" This meant he told his ships to keep going forward, even when facing dangerous underwater bombs called torpedoes.

The monument at his grave looks like a ship's mast and is made of granite and marble. It marks where he, his wife, his son, and his daughter-in-law are buried. This site was named a National Historic Landmark on October 16, 2012. A National Historic Landmark is a place that is very important to the history of the United States.

You can find this special site inside Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. Woodlawn Cemetery itself is also a National Historic Landmark! Farragut's gravesite is the only high-quality place left that is directly connected to his life.

What Does the Farragut Gravesite Look Like?

The Farragut grave is in the northeastern part of Woodlawn Cemetery, in an area called Aurora Hill. It sits in a round plot of land. This round plot is part of a bigger, diamond-shaped section.

The main monument stands on a small hill. Around the plot, there is a paved path for visitors.

Parts of the Monument

The monument has three main parts, starting from the bottom:

  • A strong foundation block made of granite.
  • A marble pedestal, which is like a sturdy base.
  • A tall marble column on top.

The column is beautifully carved with pictures that show important moments from Farragut's life. It is designed to look like a wooden mast from a ship. At the very top of the column, there is a carved American flag that looks like it's draped over something.

Special Carvings and Details

At the bottom of the column, you can see carvings of things related to the Navy. There are also pictures of Farragut's famous Civil War ship, the USS Hartford. You can also see images of Forts Jackson and Philips. Farragut bravely sailed his ships past the guns of these forts during the Capture of New Orleans.

The pedestal, which is square, has words carved into it. These words describe the brave things Farragut did during his life. The company that carved this amazing memorial was Casoni & Isola. They were based in New York but owned marble quarries in Italy.
