What Was the Admiralty?

This meant it looked after all the warships, submarines, and naval bases. It also managed the sailors and officers who served in the navy.

A Long History

The Admiralty had a very long history. It existed for hundreds of years, making important decisions about Britain's naval power. It played a key role in many famous battles and helped Britain become a powerful seafaring nation. Its leaders were often important politicians or naval officers.

Joining Forces: The Ministry of Defence

In 1963, a big change happened. The Admiralty, which had been independent for so long, joined with two other important ministries. These were the War Office, which managed the army, and the Air Ministry, which managed the air force.

Why the Change?

The New Ministry

This new, combined department was named the Ministry of Defence. Today, the Ministry of Defence controls all parts of the British Armed Forces. So, while the name "Admiralty" is no longer used for a separate ministry, its important work continues under the larger Ministry of Defence.
