Adolfo Bellocq (born 1899, died 1972) was an important Argentine artist. He was especially famous for his lithographs, which are a type of printmaking.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Adolfo Bellocq was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He taught himself how to create art, especially xylography (which is like engraving on wood) and other forms of engraving. His talent was recognized, and in 1928, he became the Director of the Lithography Workshop. This workshop was part of the well-known Ernesto de la Cárcova Fine Arts School in Buenos Aires.

Capturing Life and Gaining Recognition

Bellocq quickly started winning awards for his art. He created powerful images that showed the tough working conditions in the slaughterhouses of Buenos Aires' southside, specifically in an area called Barracas. His success led to the first Argentine Lithography Exposition in 1931, where his work was featured.

He also contributed to Claridád, a leading art magazine in Buenos Aires at the time. Through this work, he joined other artists and writers to form a group known as the "Boedo Group." This group was named after the avenue in the southside where Claridád magazine was published. Bellocq also illustrated several books, including a 1930 edition of Martín Fierro by José Hernández, a very famous Argentine poem.

Awards and Challenges

Adolfo Bellocq's art caught the eye of important art supporters in Buenos Aires, such as Francisco Colombo and Eduardo Bullrich. He even won a silver medal at the Paris International Art Exposition in 1937.

However, many of Bellocq's artworks faced a sad fate. Although Colombo and Bullrich helped to preserve over 400 of his pieces, more than 2,000 of his lithographs were lost over the years. This happened because he often made them on materials like newsprint and untreated wooden planks, which are not very durable.
