Sir Adolphus Oughton (born around 1685 – died September 4, 1736) was an important British Army officer and a politician. He was known as the 1st Baronet of Tetchbrook. A Baronet is a special title of honor, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. Sir Adolphus lived in Tachbrook, which is in Warwickshire, England.

Early Life and Education

Adolphus Oughton was the son of Adolphus Oughton and Mary Samwell. His mother's family was from Upton, Northamptonshire. He went to Trinity College, Oxford for his education. Later, in 1703, he also studied at the Middle Temple, which is a place where people learn to become lawyers.

Military Service

Sir Adolphus Oughton had a successful career in the British Army.

  • In 1706, he became a captain and a lieutenant-colonel in the 1st Foot Guards.
  • By 1715, he was a major and a colonel in the Coldstream Guards.
  • He became a lieutenant-colonel in the 8th Dragoons in 1717.
  • In 1733, he took charge of the 8th Dragoons as their colonel.
  • He was promoted to brigadier-general in 1735. This was a very high rank in the army.

From 1714 to 1717, he also worked for the Prince of Wales. He was a "Groom of the Bedchamber," which was an important role helping the Prince.

Political Career

Besides his army career, Sir Adolphus Oughton was also involved in politics.

  • He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Coventry.
  • He served as an MP from 1715 until his death in 1736.
  • In 1718, he received the special title of Baronet. This made him "Sir Adolphus Oughton, 1st Baronet, of Tetchbrook."

Family Life

Sir Adolphus Oughton passed away in September 1736. He was married twice.

  • His first wife was his cousin, Frances Wagstaffe. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Wagstaffe.
  • His second wife was Elizabeth, the daughter of John Baber.

Sir Adolphus did not have any children who could inherit his special title. Because of this, the Baronet title ended when he died. However, he did have a son, James Adolphus Dickenson Oughton, who also became a lieutenant-general in the British Army.
