Adonis, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Adonis is a small, unincorporated community located in the northern part of Polk County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's found right on the southern edge of Pomme de Terre Lake, a popular spot for outdoor activities.

History

The community of Adonis got its name from Adonis, a famous god in ancient Greek stories. He was known for his great beauty and connection to nature and plants.

Adonis had its own post office, which opened in 1895. A post office was very important back then because it was the main way people sent and received letters, packages, and news. It helped connect the small community to the rest of the world. This post office served the area for many years before it closed in 1935.

In 1925, Adonis was a very small place, with only about 25 people living there.
