Adrian Lowe was born with a special condition. When he was four years old, his right leg was amputated. This means doctors removed part of his leg to help him live a healthy life.
Adrian first loved swimming and wanted to compete in that sport. However, after the 1987 Australian National Amputee Games, he decided to switch to athletics. He found his passion on the track.
He trained hard with his coach, Colin Wright. They practiced at the Rotary Athletics Field in Chatswood, New South Wales. This training helped him become a top athlete.
Paralympic Success in Seoul
Adrian Lowe was only 16 years old when he competed in the 1988 Seoul Games. He was still a student at Fort Street High School in Petersham, New South Wales.
At these Games, Adrian showed incredible talent. He won two gold medals for Australia. These were in the Men's 4 × 100 m Relay A2A4-7 and Men's 4 × 400 m Relay A2A4-7 events.
He also earned three silver medals. These were in the Men's 100 m A4A9, Men's 200 m A4A9, and Men's 400 m A4A9 events. Winning five medals at such a young age was a huge achievement.
During the Games, Adrian had a unique look. He shaved his head and left a "V for victory" mohawk hairstyle. This showed his spirit and determination.
