Adrian Scrope (Royalist) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Adrian Scrope (born around 1616, died 1666) was an English politician from Cockerington, Lincolnshire. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1661 until his death. During the English Civil War, he was a Royalist officer, meaning he supported King Charles I.

Early Life and Education

Adrian Scrope was the son of Sir Gervase Scrope. His mother was Catherine Hungerford. Adrian went to Westminster School, a famous school in London. In 1632, when he was 16, he started studying at St John's College, Cambridge. Later, in 1634, he joined Lincoln's Inn, which is a place where people train to become lawyers.

The English Civil War

When the English Civil War began, Adrian's father, Sir Gervase Scrope, formed a group of soldiers to fight for King Charles I. His father was badly hurt in the Battle of Edgehill but survived.

Adrian Scrope also served the King. From 1641 to 1646, he was a "Gentleman of the Privy Chamber." This was an important role, working closely with the King. He also became a Colonel in the King's army, leading a group of horse soldiers (cavalry) from 1642 to 1646. Because he and his father supported the King, they faced difficulties after the war.

After the Monarchy Returned

After the war, the monarchy was brought back to England. This was called the Restoration. King Charles II became king.

In 1661, Sir Adrian Scrope was honored as a Knight of the Bath. This happened during King Charles II's coronation. That same year, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby. He served in the Parliament known as the Cavalier Parliament. He also continued his military service as a captain in the Earl of Cleveland's Horse from 1662 until he passed away in 1666.

Family Life

Sir Adrian Scrope married Mary Carr. Her father was Sir Robert Carr. Adrian and Mary had a son named Sir Carr Scrope.
