Adriana Margarita Olguín Büche (born Luz Adriana Margarita Olguín Buche; 18 November 1911 – 24 December 2015) was a Chilean lawyer and politician. She made history as the first woman to become a government minister in Chile. She served as the Minister of Justice under President Gabriel González Videla.
Early Life and Education
Adriana Olguín was born in Valparaíso, Chile, in 1911. Her parents were Arsenio Olguín and Adela Büche. She went to school in her hometown.
Later, she studied law at the University of Chile. In 1938, she became a lawyer. She earned this title with great honors. While studying, she met Alberto Baltra, who later became her husband. They had one son, Luis Alberto.
Career Highlights
After finishing university, Adriana Olguín worked in several important roles. She was a professional attorney for Valparaíso Customs. She also taught law at a university.
She was active in politics too. She helped create the National Association of Housewives. She supported the Radical Party, like her husband. However, she was never an official member of the party.
In 1952, she was chosen to be the Minister of Justice. This was during the time Gabriel González Videla was president. She only served for a short time. But her appointment was very important. She was the first woman ever to hold a cabinet position in Latin America. A cabinet position is a top job in the government.
Soon after Olguín became a minister, another woman, María Teresa del Canto, became Minister of Education. This happened between 1952 and 1953. However, women did not have many big roles in the Chilean government until the 1990s.
From 1946 to 1953, Adriana Olguín worked in the Women's Bureau. In 1955, she joined the board of the Bar Association. This group represents lawyers. In the 1960s, she was a legal advisor to the Comptroller General of the Republic. This office checks how the government spends money. Later, she joined the State Council. This council advised the government from 1981 to 1989.
