Fra' Adrien de Wignacourt (born 1618, died 1697) was a very important leader of the Order of Malta. He served as the 63rd Grand Master from 1690 to 1697.
The Grand Master was like the head of state for the Order of Malta. This group was a powerful religious and military order. They were famous for defending Malta and protecting ships in the Mediterranean Sea.
Who Was Adrien de Wignacourt?
Adrien de Wignacourt was born in France in 1618. He joined the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of Saint John. This was a group of knights who dedicated their lives to helping others and defending their faith.
He was related to another famous Grand Master, Fra Alof de Wignacourt. Alof was his uncle and had also led the Order many years before.
Becoming Grand Master
In 1690, the previous Grand Master, Fra Gregorio Carafa, passed away. The Knights then held an election to choose their new leader. Adrien de Wignacourt was chosen to be the 63rd Grand Master of the Order. He officially took office on July 24, 1690.
During his time as Grand Master, he was responsible for the Order's activities. This included maintaining the defenses of Malta. It also meant protecting trade routes from pirates. The Order's navy was very active during this period.
End of His Leadership
Adrien de Wignacourt served as Grand Master for about seven years. He died on February 4, 1697, in Malta. After his death, Fra Ramon Perellos y Roccaful was elected to take his place as the next Grand Master.
