A New Ruler for Gwynedd
Aeddan ap Blegywryd took control of Gwynedd in 1005. Before him, Cynan ap Hywel had been the Prince of Gwynedd. When Cynan died, Aeddan became the new ruler. It's not clear exactly how Aeddan took the throne. Since he wasn't from the main royal family, he might have taken power by force.
Why People Accepted Aeddan
At that time, the people of Wales were open to new leaders. Some previous rulers had been very unpopular. They treated their subjects unfairly. They took people's belongings and were often cruel. Because of this, the Welsh people were ready to accept new rulers like Aeddan. They didn't see him as someone who had wrongly taken the throne.
Challenges to Aeddan's Rule
Before Aeddan became ruler, another leader named Idwal ap Meurig had lost his lands in Gwynedd. He got them back in 993. But then, Aeddan took control of North Wales around the year 1000. Idwal's son, Iago, had to leave and went to Ireland.
Later, Iago died in Ireland. His son, Cynan, tried to get North Wales back. He even had help from some Irish Danes. But Cynan was not successful in his attempts.
The End of Aeddan's Reign
In 1018, Aeddan ap Blegywryd faced a challenge. A man named Llywelyn ap Seisyll fought against him for control. Llywelyn's family background is not well known. A big battle took place between their forces. Aeddan ap Blegywryd was defeated in this battle. He and his four sons were all killed. After this, Llywelyn ap Seisyll became the new ruler.
