Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Idwal ap Meurig (died 997) was a Welsh ruler who became the king of Gwynedd. He lived during a time when many people fought to control the different kingdoms in Wales.

Early Life and Challenges

Idwal ap Meurig was the son of Meurig ab Idwal Foel. His father was supposed to become king, but he was killed in 986. This happened during a period of many battles for power in Wales, especially after the death of Hywel Dda in 950.

After his father died, young Idwal had to leave his home to stay safe. He found safety at a religious school or community in Llancarfan. This was a difficult time for him, as he was the rightful heir but couldn't claim his place.

Maredudd Takes Control

While Idwal was in hiding, Maredudd ab Owain took control of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Maredudd didn't just stop there. A few years later, he marched into an area called Glamorgan. He brought an army that included soldiers from Denmark, known as Danish mercenaries. These soldiers were paid to fight.

Maredudd's goal was to find and capture Idwal. His army caused a lot of damage to the land. However, he was not successful in finding Idwal.

Becoming King of Gwynedd

By the year 995, Idwal and his brothers, the sons of Meurig, had gathered enough supporters. They formed an army and returned to North Wales. They fought against Maredudd in a battle near Llangwm. Idwal's forces won this important battle.

After their victory, Idwal finally became the king of Gwynedd. This was a big achievement after years of hiding and struggle.

Fixing the Kingdom

During Maredudd's time as ruler, the Danes had caused a lot of problems in the country. They had taken over many areas. Churches were damaged or robbed, and people felt hopeless. There was also a serious shortage of food, meaning many people didn't have enough to eat.

Idwal was praised in an old Welsh book called the Gwentian Chronicle. This book said he was brave and a good leader. He worked hard to fix the problems caused by the Danes and to help his people. He tried to bring hope back to the kingdom.

Final Battle and Legacy

Sadly, Idwal's reign as king was short. In 997, he was killed while trying to fight off the Danes once more. These Danish invaders, led by Sweyn (the son of Harald), were causing destruction again in Anglesey.

Idwal ap Meurig died trying to protect his people and his land from the invaders. He left behind a young son named Iago ab Idwal ap Meurig. Idwal is remembered for his courage and his efforts to restore his kingdom.
