Aemilia Hilaria (born around 300 AD, died around 363 AD) was a skilled doctor from the Gallo-Roman region. She was known for her medical practice and for writing books about women's health, specifically gynecology (the study of the female reproductive system) and obstetrics (the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth). Her cheerful personality as a baby earned her the nickname "Hilaria."

Who Was Aemilia Hilaria?

Aemilia Hilaria was an important figure in ancient medicine. She lived during the time of the Roman Empire. Her work focused on helping women with their health. She even wrote books to share her knowledge.

Early Life and Family

Aemilia was born in the Roman Empire, in an area that is now part of Moselle, France. Her parents were Caecilius Agricius Arborius and Aemilia Corinthia Maura. They were nobles from Gaul, but they were not very wealthy.

A Dedicated Doctor

Aemilia Hilaria chose to stay in her home region as an adult. There, she became a respected physician. She was the aunt of Ausonius, a famous Gallo-Roman senator. Ausonius later became a teacher to the Roman Emperor Gratian.

Ausonius wrote a collection of poems about his family members. This collection was called Parentalia. Thanks to these poems, we know almost everything about Aemilia and her family today.

In his poem about Aemilia, Ausonius described her as a very dedicated person. He wrote that she chose not to marry. Instead, she focused entirely on her medical career. He said she was "trained in the medical arts as well as any man." This shows how skilled and knowledgeable she was.

Ausonius also called her an honest and very capable doctor. He mentioned that she helped her own brother, who was also a physician, with his studies. This highlights her commitment to medicine and her helpful nature.
