How This Plant Got Its Name
The first time this plant was officially described was in 1809. It was named Sempervivum dodrantale by a scientist named Carl Ludwig von Willdenow.
Later, in 1995, another scientist, Theodorus Hendrikus Maria Mes, moved this plant into the Aeonium group. Sometimes, old names are still used as synonyms. For this plant, Greenovia dodrantalis was another name it had.
What Aeonium dodrantale Looks Like
This plant is a rosette plant, which means its leaves grow in a circular, rose-like shape. It lives for many years. It often grows in thick clumps, forming many rosettes.
The plant has a thin, smooth stem that can be about 2 to 8 inches long. The rosettes themselves are shaped like a cup or an urn. They are usually 3 to 6 centimeters wide. During dry times, these rosettes close up tightly to save water.
The leaves are packed closely together. They are pale green, sometimes with a bluish tint. Each leaf is about 2 to 3.5 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters wide. The leaves are rounded or flat at the tip. They are also slightly wider at the top and narrow down towards the stem. The edges of the leaves are a bit see-through.
When the plant blooms, its flowers grow on a flattened stalk. This flower stalk is about 3 to 6 centimeters long and 5 to 10 centimeters wide. The main stem holding the flowers is 10 to 25 centimeters long and has many leaves on it.
Each flower has 18 to 23 parts. The flowers are bright yellow. The petals are about 6 to 7 millimeters long.
