Lyrics Abdul Bari Jahani
Music Babrak Wassa
Adopted 2006

The Afghan National Anthem is also known as "Millî Surûd" in Pashto. This means 'National Anthem'. It was officially chosen as Afghanistan's national anthem in May 2006.

A talented person named Babrak Wassa created the music for the anthem. Another person, Abdul Bari Jahani, wrote all the words, also known as the lyrics.

The Constitution says the anthem's words should be in Pashto. However, some people think it would be better if the anthem had no words at all. They believe this could help reduce disagreements between different groups of people in the country. This idea is similar to anthems like Intermeco or Evropa, which are played without singing.

What are the Lyrics of the Afghan National Anthem?

The Afghan National Anthem has special words that talk about the country and its people. The main language for the lyrics is Pashto. There is also an unofficial version in Dari.

English Translation of the Anthem's Words

Here is what the lyrics mean in English:

This land is Afghanistan,
It is the pride of every Afghan.
The land of peace, the land of the sword,
Each of its sons is brave.
This is the country of every tribe,
The land of Balochs and Uzbeks;
Of Pashtuns and Hazaras;
Of Turkmens and Tajiks.
With them, there are Arabs and Gurjars,
Pamiris, Nuristanis,
Brahuis, and Qizilbash;
also Aimaqs and Pashais.
This land will shine forever,
Like the sun in the blue sky.
In the chest of Asia,
It will remain as a heart forever.
We will follow the one God:
We all say, "Allahu Akbar!"
We all say, "Allahu Akbar!"
We all say, "Allahu Akbar!"
